Dry golden grassland running up into bare hills

The Island Has Two Faces

Dry from April to October: brown hills, settled seas, and the surf season. Wet from November: green, humid, and a different island entirely.

When to visit Sumbawa

April to October for sun, passable roads and surf. Outside that, fewer people and a greener island.

The dry season is the straightforward answer and the busy one. Prices and lineups both peak in July and August.

Patterns, not promises. El Niño years and local anomalies move all of this, and nobody can book you a good week in advance.

Dry
April to October. Sunniest, driest, and the core surf window.
Wet
November to March. Rain in bursts, greener hills, smaller surf.
Busiest
July and August. Book six to nine months ahead.
Quietest
February and March. Cheapest, and the least reliable weather.

Broadly year-round in Saleh Bay, calmer seas in the dry months.

The Year at a Glance

One strip, twelve months. Everything below is a pattern rather than a forecast.

April – October

Dry Season

Southeast trades, consistent Indian Ocean swell, dry roads and brown hills. The island at its most straightforward and its most booked.

Surfers, first-time visitors

November, March

Shoulder

Transitional winds and mixed swell. Glassy mornings, thinner crowds, and prices below the peak.

Mixed groups, better value

December – February

Wet Season

Rain in heavy bursts rather than all day. Green hills, smaller surf, and some dirt roads that stop being roads.

Intermediates, longboarders

We do not promise bluebird days or wildlife on cue. If your dates fall in a weak window we will tell you before you book, not after.

What Each Season Does to Your Trip

The best month depends entirely on what you came for.

Empty reef lineup peeling in clean conditions

Surf

Dry season delivers the swell and the offshore mornings. Wet season is smaller and better suited to improvers.
