Hollow barrel throwing over shallow reef

Reef, and Almost No One Out

Two coasts, a dozen named waves, and a season that runs April to October. All of it breaks over reef.

Surfing in Sumbawa

World-class waves with a fraction of the crowd — and almost nothing forgiving enough to learn on.

Lakey packs four breaks into one bay. West Sumbawa spreads three heavy ones along a coast you drive between. They suit different surfers.

Reef, tide and distance from help are the real variables here. We say so on every page rather than in a footnote.

Season
April to October, with June to August the core.
Zones
Lakey and Hu’u in Dompu; Maluk and Sekongkang in West Sumbawa.
Level
Intermediate minimum almost everywhere. Nungas is the one exception.
Bottom
Reef, mostly shallow and live. Booties and a first-aid kit are normal here.
Stays
US$25 a night at a camp to US$350 at a resort, usually with meals.

Three Guides

Written for people who already surf reef, and honest with those who do not.

Wave tunnelling over dark water

Lakey Peak

Four breaks inside a walk of each other. Dense, social, and the busiest water on the island at dawn.

Empty reef lineup peeling in clean conditions

West Sumbawa

Supersuck, Scar Reef and Yoyos, spread along the coast. Heavier water, emptier lineups, longer drives.

Camps and Resorts

Where to sleep. The wave out front is often identical — what changes is how you live between sessions.
